I was looking for something quirky & full of character

Sally King made the most of her love of interior design to decorate her home
The sophisticated colour scheme of cool grey, white and black sits perfectly against the backdrop of painted walls in Elephant’s Breath, by Farrow and Ball. The Hudson grey sofa is from Laura Ashley

Moving from a modern house to renovate an older property can often mean employing numerous tradespeople and a considerable amount of time and budget. Fortunately the skills required for this Hertfordshire cottage were already in-house, as Sally King is passionate about interior design and her partner Ronnie Wilson is a builder accustomed to transforming clients’ houses regardless of period or size.

‘We have both recently moved out of modern houses,’ says Sally. ‘I was looking for something completely different from my previous property, so an older house with traditional features appealed to me, but so many I saw had ample space upstairs, but not enough downstairs. I particularly liked the larger living space of this cottage and its potential to possibly extend.’

Good idea!

Using strategically positioned mirrors around the room bounces light and creates a greater feeling of space.
