We extended to create the perfect kitchen diner

Sharon Hughes decided to extend to create a kitchen dining space fit for her family

Sharon Hughes, 48, and her partner Nick moved to their two-bedroom end terrace house in Stilton in 2013 with Sharon’s three boys, James, Daniel and Joe. The house wasn’t ideal and needed a lot of renovating, but the couple could see the potential and the fact it was end terrace and had lots of ground meant they could extend to get exactly what they wanted. ‘The kitchen was tiny and we only had two bedrooms so a two-storey extension made sense,’ explains Sharon. ‘The new kitchen was my main priority, as I wanted an open-plan space that we could enjoy family meals in and doors that would open into the south-facing garden. We’d lived with the old kitchen and no proper dining space for nearly 18 months so we finally took the plunge and got the architect in to start the planning process,’ smiles Sharon.

Total Cost £7,130

The central island was Sharon’s must-have request in her kitchen and means she can prep food while chatting to the boys
