Clever choices have made our bathroom feel light

Shiny surfaces and plenty of white reflect the light and brighten up Linda Yarker’s windowless bathroom
MAKE YOUR SPACE WORK HARD The stylishly-shaped bath doubles as a comfortable shower enclosure, getting the most from the space. The well-designed screen ensures no leaks or splashes.

When Linda and Stuart Yarker retired, they took the opportunity to buy the home they had lived in for 11 years, and they decided to modernise it throughout. ‘The whole house was quite old-fashioned,’ recalls Linda. ‘The bathroom was very small, with a separate WC next door. There was no window, no proper shower, and all the fixtures were very tired.’ The couple agreed that the wall between the two rooms should come down to make a single space. Once they had checked the new measurements, they set out to explore what was available. ‘We had a budget in mind and shopped around to compare prices and choice,’ says Linda. ‘We wanted a practical bathroom with a clean, modern look, and ideally a bath and separate shower.’ After some thorough research, Linda and Stuart settled on their local Bathstore. They chose large, white wall tiles to emphasise light, adding a section of black for contrast, and wood-look floor tiles for warmth. With limited layout options, keeping the bath, WC and basin in the same positions would save on plumbing costs, but meant there was nowhere for a separate shower. ‘Rather than try to squeeze one in, the designer suggested an over-bath shower,’ says Linda. ‘That was good advice and I’m pleased we followed it.’
