I’m always re-decorating

Moira Samater’s home, has evolved over the years to reflect her changing tastes
Moira found an old piece of wood, which she had colour matched at B&Q to create the paint for the grey feature wall. It provides a great backdrop for her Ikea sofa and old armchair that’s been re-covered in a patterned John Lewis fabric. Orange cushions from Dunelm and John Lewis add vibrancy

Good idea!

A large decorative plate or charger can make a great piece of 3D artwork.

Changing things around is second nature to Moira Samater, whose 1930s semi has seen countless updates over the last nine years.

As a self-taught DIY-er and a big fan of upcycling furniture, Moira has redecorated throughout many times. ‘I’m either re-painting second-hand furniture or stripping it back, and then selling it and buying something else when I get bored,’ she says. ‘I might paint an old lamp base and update it with a new shade, or I’ll reupholster a headboard by taking it apart and seeing how it’s put together. It’s just trial and error as nobody taught me how to decorate.’

After downsizing from a modern detached house in Houghton-le-Spring when she got divorced, mum of three Moira decided to return to the leafy suburb of Ashbrooke in Sunderland where she started her family.
