What to consider when moving abroad

Relocating overseas? Here’s how to ensure everything goes to plan
The scenery, climate, relaxed lifestyle and job prospects are some of the reasons why more than one and a quarter million British expats have started a new life in Australia

Nearly five million UK citizens currently live overseas. According to research from Lloyds Bank, 850,000 Brits relocated abroad between 2009 and 2014, with Australia by far the most popular destination, followed by the US, Spain, France, New Zealand and Canada. Only time will tell how the Brexit decision affects future numbers. Becoming an expat isn’t a decision to be taken lightly, so it’s vital to be fully informed about all aspects before taking the plunge.

If you’re relocating for work or to be close to family, you’ll already have chosen your destination. Or maybe you’ve fallen in love with somewhere you’ve been on holiday. However, if you’re looking to broaden your horizons for a new start in life, the world is your oyster. Consider your priorities – for example, are you after a hot climate, and would you prefer an English-speaking environment or to submerge yourself in a new culture? Don’t forget to research the cost of living in different countries, including healthcare which can be expensive.
