Classic Massey  |  Classic Massey May 2013
Hello to you all and welcome to
the May issue of CM&Fe. If you’ll
permit me, I’d like to begin my
ramblings this month with a story
regarding my three year-old daughter: “Look
daddy, the crisp man’s driving a tractor!”
she informed me as she came running
through to the kitchen one weekend.
Well, by the time I’d followed her back
to the television, ‘the crisp man’ had gone
– and it would be another two days before
I’d finally fathomed what she was harping
on about.
To see Gary Lineker driving an MF 135
was, I’ll admit, a bit of a surprise – but an
amusing one nonetheless. Of all the tractors
England’s finest (in my opinion) centre
forward could have picked, thankfully it was
the archetypal little red tractor!
“Why a 135?” I wondered – but my
question was answered when I took
said daughter to nursery a few days
later. There, in the room, was a huge
red cardboard tractor that was taking
punishment from several under-fours.
The fact that I had seen the very same
tractor being used as a promotional tool
for Mr. Lineker’s employer in the foyer of
the local supermarket a few days before
is another story. Sometimes it’s better not
to ask!
Anyway, when I quizzed a member of
nursery staff about the introduction of the
cardboard masterpiece, she simply replied,
“Well, everyone loves a 135, don’t they?”
I’m not sure what surprised me more
– the fact that the answer to my original
question had come from such an unlikely
source or that a young female, barely out
of her teens, knew what a 135 was!
As far as I’m concerned, this proves two
things, 1: The Massey Ferguson 135 is a
popular tractor and 2: Advertising agencies
know what they’re doing!
Now, on to other matters. I’m not one
for shameless plugs and advertising, but I’d like to abuse my privileges by coming to
the aid of someone I have a great deal of
respect for.
