WILL YOUNG
LIGHT IT UP
BMG
★★★
Will Young’s ninth album is billed as a return to “joyous pop”, with some inevitable slides into miserabilism, as is his wont. It is his first LP on a major label since 2015, after a few experimental years on Cooking Vinyl, where he scored two Top 5s. And therefore, nothing on Light It Up feels like it’s been left to chance, with several songs giving the impression that they’ve been genetically engineered and focus-grouped to within an inch of their lives.
