Copy That
Despite its fame, and let’s face it perfectly chosen name, the Copicat has been through many incarnations. Designed by Charlie Watkins in the late 50s and marketed initially as a guitar effect that could deliver a sound like that of chart toppers The Shadows, the initial production run of 100 were sold directly from Watkins’ Balham shop. It soon found popularity with singers and in the intervening decades has also become a popular studio tool. For many years the unit retained its open tape design; however, in 2009 a non-tape digital version appeared.
