Last month we speculated about the studio of tomorrow, and how a range of new releases (namely, the third version of Ableton’s Push and the long-awaited Logic Pro for iPad) were potential harbingers of an entirely computer-free state of affairs. This brave new desktopless world was further indicated by the awe-inspiring Vision Pro demo from Apple, the first genuinely exciting AR tech we’ve really seen. Though in its infancy (and with some pretty big hurdles needing to be overcome) it leaves those of us of a musical persuasion imagining what headset and gesture-based production software will inevitably be built for it.

While it’s always a geeky thrill to ponder what the future will bring, it’s also important to reflect on how far things have already come. Only 30 years back, home production was still predominantly a hardware affair. To make release-quality tracks, you’d really need to shell out for some studio time, or be good enough to get signed.
