CINEMATIC ICON

Location Picton, Ont.

Name game The theatre—open since 1956—was originally part of a chain in Ontario until the owners sold the individual locations. When Paul and Nancy Peterson bought the Picton Mustang in 1998, “we were allowed to keep the name,” says Paul. There are other Mustang Drive-Ins in Ontario, “but ours is the coolest.”

Backstory Not much has changed since the Peterson family took over. Nightly movies—always a double bill, always a family movie first— still start shortly before dark, May to September. “Cottagers are our stockin- trade,” says Paul. Some have come to the theatre for 40 years. Others are brand new to driveins. “The most common question I get is ‘Are we allowed to leave after one movie?’ And I always say, ‘No, you have to stay.’” (He’s joking. You don’t have to stay.)
