Cottage Q & A

I LOVE to grill. What are the rules about using a barbecue on a boat?

—QUINN SUTHERLAND, VIA EMAIL

Transport Canada’s Small Vessel Regulations permit barbecues on pleasure craft as long as “the system and its installation conform to the recommended practices and standards for marine use.” The rules don’t say that you can’t use any old barbecue, but it’s safer (and more convenient) to get one that’s purpose-built.

Marine grills are designed for “the up-and-down motion of a boat,” says Michelle Parry of Dickinson Marine in Surrey, B.C., a company that makes marine barbecues. Not to mention the wind: these appliances have features such as viewing windows built into the lids. They often come with specialized mounts; they’re compact and stowable; and some are meant to be left in place, covered with special storage bags. The ones made with marine-grade stainless steel are more likely to resist corrosion.
