A 150-year-old barn gets reincarnated as a bunkie

Style Ideas

PAUL ORENSTEIN

OLD IS NEW

Almost every piece used to build this bunkie came from a rundown barn— even the tin roof.

As the 19th century barn on her property started to teeter, Judith van Bastelaar hatched a plan. She wasn’t about to hold a barn-burning—the structure had been on the land for 150 years. Judith had a vision. The old barn would get a new life as a guest cabin with a design inspired by joglos, the open-air huts she fell in love with on a trip to Indonesia. She called up Ric Clark, a fellow Waupoos, Ont., resident and the owner of Level N Square, a building company specializing in heavy timber-frame construction, to make her vision a reality. Judith got what she wanted: a cozy, tworoom bunkie dubbed “the tree house,” made entirely from pieces of the barn, save for the screen and the fasteners. With a new coat of stain to keep the wood from rotting, “that thing will last another 100 years,” says Clark.
