MASTER RETREAT. This master bedroom is now where the living room used to be. They used Woodgrain trim to create an accent on the main wall, and Kara added an old trunk at the foot of the bed. “The highlight of the room is the Thos. Moser Pencil Post bed,” says Kara. “It’s simple yet elegant. I tried to stay true to mixing antiques with new pieces.” The old pine floors in this room were in bad shape, so they replaced them with a white oak flooring option from Mullican Flooring.

Part of the renovation process is
deciding what to keep and what to change in an older home. This Project House farmhouse from the 1900s has many charming qualities, but our designer and builder team Kara and Matt Christensen of Garden Gate Homes have been working to decide where major renovations are needed and where simple cosmetic updates will suffice. For the master bedroom and three guest bedrooms in this home, they were able to marry original features with updates, as well as modern furniture with antiques, to create perfectly balanced and relaxing spaces.
