The recent drama around spiralling ticket costs for Oasis’s 2025 comeback tour made national headlines, with our newly-elected politicians promising regulation to outlaw “surge pricing”. It’s a daring intervention in the normal laws of supply and demand, in which the Government must tread most carefully – if indeed it chooses to tread at all.
Of greater concern than ticket prices for an Oasis gig (to me, at least) was a suggestion from the Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, that prices for peak-time holidays should be covered by new regulation too. It suggests real lack of understanding of the economics of our sector and a lack of imagination about other practical measures to make a real difference.
