TOPPING a wide-ranging sale at Canterbury Auction Galleries (20% buyer’s premium) on November 29 was this fine late 18th century eightday tavern clock, left.
The 4ft 7in (1.40m) tall black japanned oak-cased clock with gilt chinoiserie decoration was made by the highly respected Norfolk maker James Calver of Diss and is recorded in Martin Gatto’s The Tavern Clock. It was pitched at £3000-4000.
