MADAM – I’m amazed at the lack of common sense that pervades the ivory debate.
The only thing that will save live elephants is to stop the poaching.
Yet the Kenyan government sets fire to £30m worth of ivory, which if it had been sold on the open market would immediately have relieved pressure on the live animals as well as providing a massive boost to protection funds. Nearly all African countries and preservation organisations have legitimate stock piles of ivory which they can’t sell because of ill-informed pressure groups. Sadly we live in a world where Twitter groups decide government policy.
