The 1878 first issue copy of Henry James’ Daisy Miller, one of the scarcest of all of the author’s first editions. It sold for £7500 at Sotheby’s. Only one copy has made more: that sold for $16,000 (then £9525) in 1990 as part of the Bradley Martin library at Sotheby’s New York.
Presentation copies of The Bostonians and a volume containing the first bookform appearance of The Turn of the Screw were among the highlights of a large Henry James collection offered in almost 50 lots as part of a Sotheby’s (25/20/12.9% buyer’s premium) sale.
Both were included in a group of books he had given to the French novelist and critic, Paul Bourget.
