HEADPHONES IN RACES CONTINUES TO BE A CONTENTIOUS ISSUE
THE article on headphones (AW, June 16) was an insight into how things have changed drastically over the years.
As an ‘old school’ runner starting way back in the 1980s, I can’t work out why everyone feels the need to have earphones stuck in their ears plus the endless fiddling with the music contraptions on their arms etc.
The only technology I had was a stop watch and a check on my mileage in the car.
Apart from the dangers of not hearing traffic behind you or warning shouts from marshals, are they really necessary?
I can appreciate that music soothes prerace jitters and nerves but if you are racing then it must be a distraction.
