YOU’RE A SENIOR PARLIAMENTARY ADVISER BY DAY AND DRAG QUEEN NANCY CLENCH BY NIGHT. WHY ARE DRAG QUEENS STILL SUCH A PART OF THE SCENE?
They have always been leaders in the gay community. Since well before Stonewall, they’ve played an important part in celebrating and promoting LGBT culture. We perform in our venues every night of the week, we’re in touch with our friends and loved ones all the time. For me, it’s more than just going to Pride marches; as a drag queen, not only was I part of the Soho vigil and the fund-raising efforts, but I’ve led campaigns in Scotland to end the gay blood ban, reject Russian town-twinning arrangements with Glasgow and to have Brian Souter’s [who campaigned against the repeal of Section 28] knighthood repealed.
