AMERICA: HOME OF A TRULY BRAVE TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY
America always seems to do everything bigger and better than us. I’ve been keeping an eye on the States for some time now, and I’ve long been impressed with the exciting and glamorous transgender movement there. Yes, they sometimes fight amongst each other, but on the whole, I see most trans campaigners in the States supporting one another, raising each other up. They’ve ended up building a highly connected trans activism ‘scene’. Well, God bless America!
One particular friendship that fills my spirit with joy is the one between Janet Mock and Laverne Cox. Mock is a bestselling author and talk show host, who just so happens to be trans. Cox is, officially, an actor and, unofficially, everyone’s favourite trans spokesperson. Both are trans women of colour. There’s a real sense of sisterhood between them and various other activists too, like the wonderful documentary producers Angelica Ross and Jen Richards, model and advocate Geena Rocero and actor Jamie Clayton. Clayton shot to fame in Netflix’s Sense8, which is directed by the wonderful Lana Wachowski. Success is shared around freely, Stateside.
