HUGHIE GETS POVETKIN

A FASCINATING crossroads battle between old warhorse Alexander Povetkin and 24-year-old Brit Hughie Fury – fresh off signing a promotional agreement with Matchroom Boxing – has been scheduled for the Vasyl Lomachenko-Luke Campbell undercard at the O2 Arena in Greenwich on August 31.

Fury has so far as a pro shown no aversion to tackling some of the better heavyweights – see Joseph Parker and Kubrat Pulev – and continues this attitude here. Since Pulev, we have watched Fury in a couple of farcical fights against Chris Norrad and Samuel Peter, and it’s now time for him to return to meaningful action. In Povetkin, he gets the opponent he is not only looking for but probably needs at this stage.

“I’m over the moon with this news,” said Fury. “These are the kind of fights I want to be in. Povetkin is a dangerous man. It’s a very serious fight but I’m confident of getting the win.”
