Love, hate, loss, religion, et cetera…” When Mississippi troubadour Zack Logan seeks to explain what his songs are about, his words fall straight out of a mould shaped ‘country’. The 34-year-old was seen in the UK in 2018 as tour support to Brent Cobb and at the Long Road Festival and won a good hearing. His debut album, Raised By Wolves, is a modest thing – just Logan and guitar, double bass, a weeping fiddle, no drums – with touchstones being Logan’s own favourite songwriters John Prine and Guy Clark. He recorded it all in just two days at East Nashville’s hip Welcome To 1979 studio, previously utilised by Jason Isbell, Steve Earle and Prine himself.
