The organic food debate hots up

The argument over whether organically produced food is or isn’t ‘healthier’ continues. Last October’s NutriNet-Santé study followed 69,000 French people and looked in detail at organic foods and cancer risk. Though it has the usual biases of observational studies, it suggests a reduction in the risk of common cancers by a quarter among people who are ‘heavy’ consumers of organic produce. The data showed a reduction in breast cancer after the menopause, but is most convincing for non-Hodgkin lymphoma – and two previous epidemiological studies showed the same preventive effects.
