Q&A |

Hi, Jim,

I am seriously considering a Duramax swap, and I need all the help I can get.

A performance-built 6.2L diesel engine equipped with a Holset HX35 turbocharger currently powers my 1995 Land Rover Discovery. The engine powers through an NV4500 six-speed manual transmission and LT230 Land Rover full-time 4WD transfer case. It’S been a journey of many ups and downs through the years, but I love the beast (it drives and sounds like one!). After 20 years of this project, the old girl is in need of some serious body restoration; the estimates I’ve had are eye-watering, to put it mildly.

So, do I shell the 6.2 into a younger Discovery, or how about getting around to that Duramax conversion that has been on my mind for years? To this end, I’ve been keeping my eye on the market for a good, low-miles Duramax/Allison takeout package— for the right money, of course. There are plenty of high-milers out there that have been in big smashes or rollovers, but I’m hoping for a nicer setup.
