PHOTO DANIEL CASE
Stormé DeLarverie was a butch, dual heritage lesbian whose clash with police was possibly one of the defining moments of the Stonewall uprising, spurring the crowd to action. No one knows for sure who “threw the first punch” on 27 June 1969 at the Stonewall Inn but she was arguably one of the first lesbian liberation activists to launch the gay rights movement.
