Can you believe it’s Christmas time again? With family and friends around, this really is the most magical season – and a time when your kitchen really does have to step up and take centre stage. With this in mind, we’ve included a feature on the 10 Top Appliances for Christmas Cooking (page 108) – each selected with de-stressing the kitchen environment for any entertaining event, be it big or small. It’s also a time when we are buying gifts for loved ones and if you’re planning a new kitchen in 2014 then one of our array of small appliances (see page 100) could be the perfect choice. One of my favourite days this month was shooting our opening feature, Beneath The Surface on page 24. I spent the day with photographer Malcolm and his wife, Fi and their daughter Mya. Together they have created a home that perfectly combines character, practicality and livability. Layers of texture from reclaimed floorboards used as a wall treatment, alongside a floor reused from an old church and a rough hewn dining table sit alongside clean white panelling and whitewashed walls. The effect was enchanting, a perfect tumble of vintage and modern in a practical living space that could be enjoyed by a vast number of guests one minute and be a cosy family home the next. But perhaps you’ll take most inspiration for the festive period from one of our favourite celebrity chefs, Jamie Oliver. In true Jamie style he’s given honest and open answers about what he and the family get up to over Christmas, what inspires him and his favourite kitchen appliances.
