FlyPast  |   March 2017
The brand new issue of FlyPast takes a look at one of the most famous British aircraft of World War Two, the legendary de Havilland Mosquito. With three of the aircraft now technically airworthy, we salute the legacy of the ‘wooden wonder’ with three interesting articles examining some of the less well known aspects of the machine’s wartime service.
Spotlight on Wildcat
The Grumman Wildcat was one of the Pacific campaign’s key fighters. Serving with the US Navy and US Marine Corps, this robust machine more than held its own in several key campaigns, include over the hotly contested island of Guadalcanal.
V-bomber genesis
Tony Buttler examines the scale test-beds that preceded the Victor and Vulcan, and the brave men that took these revolutionary aircraft aloft. He also takes a look at some of the V-bombers that might have been.
Legendary French squadron
We pay tribute to France’s greatest aviation unit, the Normandie-Niemen Regiment, while Luigi Caliaro profiles a Yak-11 that flies in the illustrious squadron’s colours.
Grumman Goose
Ace photographer John Dibbs goes air-to-air in Alaska with a Grumman Goose, while Lt Col Robert Renner speaks to the men that own and operate it.
Lancaster ‘Just Jane’
A dawn photo shoot featuring East Kirkby’s popular bomber, taken just prior to the aircraft entering the workshop for an overhaul.
We also take a visit to the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection where a Jaguar jet has been transformed from an eyesore to a complete museum exhibit, and editor Chris Gilson reports from the magnificent Museum of Flight in Seattle. Ken Ellis reflects on the use of the Handley Page Halifax as ‘met ships’ after the war, and we bring you the latest news from the Shuttleworth Collection, the Royal Navy Historic Flight and the Qantas Founders Museum, among others.
