Type 2 diabetes develops either because you have become resistant to the efect of insulin, meaning that normal insulin levels aren’t enough to keep your blood sugar under control, or because your body doesn’t make enough. In some cases, it can be a mixture of the two. It is usually, but not always, related to weight gain. Unlike type 1 diabetes, type 2 develops slowly. If it is picked up early it can often be managed with diet and lifestyle changes, but if left untreated, patients often need prescription medication. Some people with type 2 diabetes may need insulin by injection.
