This secret ingredient is loved by vegans for its savoury, parmesanlike kick. It’s bursting with B vits, too. Here’s how to add it to your cooking


BEST FOR A heart-healthy snack

Serves 4

2 tbsp nutritional yeast 100g popcorn kernels

½ tsp cayenne pepper

½ tsp ground cumin

2 tbsp rapeseed oil

Grind the nutritional yeast, cayenne pepper and cumin in a pestle and mortar. Heat the oil in a heavy-based pot with a glass lid, add the kernels, pop on the lid and shake as it pops. Once there are only pops every couple of seconds, remove from heat, tip into a large bowl; sprinkle with the spice mix and toss to coat. HEALTHY BENEFITS Popcorn is a wholegrain, and whole grains are linked to preventing heart disease, thanks to their high fibre content, vitamins and minerals. Nutritional yeast is a great swap for salted popcorn as it contains no sodium, but it has a satisfyingly punchy flavour.
