1974 FLOWER POWER
These soldiers have just overthrown the authoritarian Portuguese government – the Estado Novo regime – in a near-bloodless coup. The movement began with disafected members of the military, but when they took action on 25 April, the people rose up to support them. It became known as the Carnation Revolution, as supporters placed flowers in the barrels of the soldiers’ rifles.
