An ageing Mahatma Gandhi kisses Nandini, the young niece of his personal secretary. The Indian leader, recently released from a two-year imprisonment for his Quit India Movement against British rule, is at the ashram in Sevagram that was his centre of operations from 1936 until his assassination 70 years ago this month. This image was taken by photographer Vithalbhai Jhaveri, an activist who made it his life’s work to document Gandhi’s non-violent struggle for Indian independence.
