War is hell.” Those were the words of General William Tecumseh Sherman, who served the Union Army during the Civil War. But if war is hell for humans, it is even worse for horses.

The story of the Trakehner breed is proof of this reality. Created by the King of Prussia (part of the historical German Empire) in the early 18th century from a local East Prussian breed called the Schwaike, the Trakehner was bred to be a superb military mount with great beauty, athleticism and endurance.
