iDrum magazine: Never miss a beat  |  104 July 2012
In Drummer issue 104 we spend some time in the company of UK session-legend Ian Thomas, who has just finished one of the most high profile gigs available as house drummer on BBC1’s talent show ‘The Voice UK’. Ian gives us a thorough lowdown on what life was like working on the show, and how he approached learning and playing such a huge amount of tunes on a weekly basis. We are also joined by Latin-legend Alex Acuña who gives us a rundown of his fifty-year career, including his work with Elvis and Weather Report. Elsewhere Pete Cater talks Buddy Rich, and we meet Stuart Wilkinson to hear how he went from drum-teching for Razorlight to playing support slots at Wembley Stadium. We also shine the spotlight on Premier Drum’s new factory where they hand-build their newest ranges of snare drums, with Drummer following every step in the process.
In our regular ‘Teacher-Feature’ we meet Belfast resident Kasey Peters. Kasey received a huge amount of nominations for her teaching services, with each and every one listing her patient approach, friendly manner and un-shakeable enthusiasm as reasons for nominating. In our other regular features, Martin Oldham tells us about the UK leg of Friendly Fires latest tour, we have an expanded Riser section, meeting not one but two up and coming bands and their drummers. We get reviews of Benny Greb’s show with Blue Touch Paper at the 606 club as well as Ndugu Chancler live at Ronnie Scotts, as well as our regular gig-guide to tell you what’s happening where in the coming weeks. We also have our usual mix of news, reviews and tuition for your drumming pleasure! Reviews-wise, we take a look at Roland’s new TD-15KV e-kit, ddrum Reflex kit, DW’s upgraded 5000 pedals, Meinl Classics Custom Extreme Metal range of cymbals, Chequerplate percussion and some handcrafted Dark Matter Cymbals from Dream. All of this plus our regular news, features and tuition makes for a truly bumper issue!
