In our October issue of Drummer, we have a rare and exclusive interview with Faith No More and Ozzy Osbourne sticksman Mike Bordin, who gives us the lowdown on life as a bona-fide rock star, including how FNM got started and how he came to play with Ozzy: one of his idols from earlier in life. We also spend some time in the company of the always-inspiring Cindy Blackman-Santana, who explains how she approaches her first love: jazz, and how living and playing in the moment leads to her creating time rather than just being it’s keeper. Ranjit Barot, drummer for John McLaughlin’s Fourth Dimension, tells us how a random telephone call to an old friend led to him working alongside the Mahavishnu master-guitarist and young session supremo Luke Harris talks inspiration, on-stage mishaps and his preferred choice of drumming footwear.
Elsewhere, we have the first of a special two-part feature as international percussion maestro and Drummer regular Pete Lockett gives us a glimpse into life on the road (and in the air, and on trains....) as he keeps an exclusive diary of his recent world tour, this issue taking in China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan...the list goes on until Pete finally touches down in New Zealand. We also start a brand-new feature: Healthy Mind, Healthy Body, where we look at the physical and psychological aspects of our chosen instrument, starting with some mental rehearsal techniques courtesy of Sam Brown.
Reviews-wise, we test our DIY skills with a very interesting ‘Build Your Own’ Cajón kit courtesy of SELA percussion: spend some time with some affordable, hand-made Turkish cymbals from Amedia: two new kits from PDP: a brace of new pedals from PP and a trio of cymbal cases from Wembley Drum Centre.
All of this alongside our usual mixture of news, reviews and tuition makes this issue a must-read for anyone interested in anything drumming related!
