1The CARNIVAL OF IVREA is one of the biggest and oldest in Italy – and one of the most exciting too, thanks to the spectacular ‘Battle of the Oranges’ in which teams throw oranges at each other as part of a representation of the city’s uprising against a tyrannical marquis. The festival includes various gastronomic traditions, a parade featuring characters associated with the town’s history and – always – an enthusiastic crowd of participants and spectators. 2-5 March, www.storicocarnevaleivrea.it
