When it comes to clean handling and shot stopping, repetition and simple forward and lateral movements can be really effective, says Real Salt Lake coach TODD HOFFARD

Set up a small 2m square of cones and place one keeper inside in the middle, another 8 feet away as the server, with both facing each other. Begin first with server kicking the ball into the keeper’s chest, then above the head, for him to catch and then roll back to server. Repeat. Then activate the hamstrings by server shooting low for keeper 2 to catch and roll back.

Add a second server, same distance as server 1. Server 1 plays a one-two with the keeper inside the square before server 2 continues to volley balls at chest height. Server 1 should keep swapping sides with server 2. Servers 1 and 2 step closer to keeper. Both take turns to throw the ball at the keeper, who returns ball as quickly as he can. Servers to throw balls high and low, and speed up.
