KG colleague Emma and I were speaking to a group of gardeners recently and were really impressed by how willing they were to consider trying new crops. They all grew the old staples, but they were also keen to experiment with less familiar veggies like ocas, cucamelons and sweet potatoes.
Each month in KG we always try to include crops that you might not have tried before and in this issue we have a feature for the more adventurous; sea buckthorn has recently been brought to our attention for its reported health benefits. We also take a fresh look at a more familiar group of crops; the cabbage family has seen some interesting new developments in recent years including kalettes, colourful kales and summer sprouting broccoli. One particular nursery always comes to mind when thinking of more experimental edibles – Edulis Nursery in Berkshire. In this issue we talk to the man behind it, Paul Barney, to discover his take on some p-and-coming crops.
