Kate Marr A Busy Day in Bournemouth, 2018, oil on paper, 111⁄2x111⁄2in. (29x29cm)
Professional oil painter, Kate Marr, has a BA in Fine Art and now paints full time, working on commissions, new pieces and painting demonstrations. She paints with a traditional approach to the medium, following the basic rule of fat over lean. She describes her style as ‘a fusion of modern impressionism and realism with a lively use of brushmarks’. Kate uses Michael Harding paints in the main, on Winsor & Newton acid-free canvases, canvas boards, or oil painting paper cut to size, as the durability and vibrancy of her work is important to her. Here she describes how she painted her busy beach scene.
This lively beach scene caught Kate’s eye for the busyness of both content and colour. ‘There are so many people doing different activities, with group dynamics and relationships, and I aim to show this variety of behaviour by carefully balancing people, objects and colours. I based this on a photograph, but took colour notes on the spot. Atmosphere is everything!
