MODERNISM TURNS 100 THIS YEAR, at least if you count the birth of the Bauhaus as the turning point. This school of art and design ran from 1919 to 1933, and shaped the look of much of the modern world as we know it, not just in architecture, but in fields from furniture to typography. You can discover all this in exhibitions across Germany throughout 2019, inviting thoughts of Bauhaus-inspired travels. The movement’s first school opened in Weimar under director Walter Gropius, with teachers including artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. Classes later moved to Dessau, then to Berlin for the final term before the Nazi regime drove students and teachers into exile, where they broke new ground, from Chicago to Tel Aviv. Now the focus is returning to Germany, this particular centenarian has never looked more vital.
