Spreading across Austria’s Tyrol region like the wings of the bird for which it is named, the Eagle Walk also offers bird’s-eye views of some knock-out Alpine scenery. Though a mighty 257 miles in total, it can be broken into 33 more manageable stages, so walkers can cherry-pick a route that best suits their ability/ willingness to slog up hills. Those preferring an easy day trip should consider the Zirbenweg Trail (stage 13), which meanders through stone pines and soars over tricky terrain with some strategic cable car rides. Slightly more challenging is the trek to the pretty town of Kufstein on the banks of the Inn River (stage 3, pictured), where you can swim and sample fruity kiachl cakes. Most serious of all are the sections crossing the Lechtal Alps (stages 17-24), which encounter sharp ridges and jagged peaks. Whichever path you choose, it’s simple to plan your own trip, overnighting in huts high in the mountains or hotels that look straight off The Sound of Music set.
