WAIT, IS IT SAFE?
Five years after the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010, the damage is still visible and the effects deeply felt, but the country is well on the road to recovery – and back on the map for intrepid travellers. New hotels are springing up, travel warnings have been lifted and a new airport is bringing ever more visitors. Several UK operators have recently launched tours, a good option for visiting safely (and helping the local economy in the process). Caution is still important, but it’s now possible to experience the country’s many highlights – including a fourishing arts scene – in relative comfort.
