Hans-Joachim Roedelius has never been a krautrock poster boy like Jaki Liebezeit, Ralf Hütter and Michael Rother, but without him, electronic music would sound very different. Light years ahead, he and Dieter Moebius’ Cluster and Harmonia groups were responsible for the free-form 70s elektronische musik that inspired Brian Eno to coin the genre ambient. But Roedelius’ meisterwerks are the three solo Selbstportrait albums he released in the late 70s and early 80s - hypnotic, pulsing dream works of translucent, percolating synth improvisations. Roedelius has expanded the series with a new album, Selbstporträt Wahre Liebe, using the same equipment as on the originals, but it’s this collection of atmospheric sketches, captured when Roedelius left the tape running during his early solo sessions, that confirm him as the master of kosmische musik.
