Government urged to restore student bursaries

The government needs to restore nursing bursaries as a matter of urgency to plug the gap in the serious shortfall of nurses across the NHS, according to Unite.

The union, which has 100,000 members in the health service, made the appeal following a report by the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee, which said that ministers need to closely the monitor the impact of the removal of nursery bursaries.

Unite head of health Sarah Carpenter said: “We feel that the foot needs to be put irmly on the accelerator in addressing the shortages of nurses.
