Hong Kong—Protesters mourn Chinese Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo outside the Chinese liaison office on July 13. China’s most prominent political prisoner died at the age of 61 of multiple organ failure while serving an 11-year prison sentence for incitement to subversion of state power. Despite international pressure, the Chinese government refused to let the activist seek treatment abroad for advanced-stage liver cancer. Beijing said criticism of China’s handling of the case was an “improper” intrusion into the country’s domestic affairs.
