SECOND SITE: The Stadtschloss in Berlin will shortly house MacGregor’s latest project.
UNTIL RECENTLY, Neil MacGregor was the director of the British Museum, the U.K.’s premier archive of its own history and—in its housing of marble reliefs taken from the Parthenon in Greece—at least one other country’s. In 2017, MacGregor will be part of an astonishing change to the urban fabric of Berlin, dedicated to promoting different kinds of links between countries. The exterior rebuilding of the Berliner Stadtschloss, a baroque palace blown up by the East Germans in the aftermath of World War II, will be completed this year, transforming the city center. By 2019, the palace will house the Humboldt Forum, a new museum and center for intercultural dialogue, with MacGregor as artistic director.
