A new interactive map that purports to show clan areas at the beginning of the 17th century has come in for criticism, particularly in the Oban area.
Willie Reid wrote: ‘Strictly for the tourists I’m afraid. Clan tartans as we know them are a fairly recent invention, the only difierence in colours would have been the vegetable dyes available in certain areas. The map is also doubtful as difierent clans would merge together in certain areas. Harmless if used as a bit of fun but, a serious aid to genealogy? No. Most of North Lorne is missing.’ Laura Cook commented: ‘We don’t exist on this map, the Liosaich must have a rebel stronghold!’
Niall Gordan posted: ‘Well, I already know (and am known in Ireland as this in Gaeilge) I am Niall of the Nine Pints!.’ Linda Simpson lamented: ‘They missed Buchanan and dont think I saw Carmichael, McDougall, MacCall, McGillivary or Livingstone anywhere on here.’
