Low dose and image quality

The science behind achieving a lower dose of X-ray for the patient without losing image quality

This article aims to encourage readers to think about the dose of their X-ray device and urge them to ask manufacturers to show their research when they claim that they have an ultra-low dose machine – without loss of image quality (Figure 1).

The science

Covering this issue is Dosimetry of orthodontic diagnostic FOVs using low dose CBCT protocol is a paper by JB Ludlow and J Koivisto from the University of Finland. The paper looks into the science and research behind achieving a lower dose of X-ray for the patient without losing image quality. We will look at the salient points.


Use of ionising radiation in diagnostic medical examinations has increased over the last 20 years to the point where the annual per capita dose to the US population from all sources has doubled (Report 160, 2009).
