The positive benefits of cold water swimming on mental health are a hot topic in the media at the moment following a case report published in British Medical Journal Case Reports on open water swimming as a treatment for major depressive disorder. Anecdotally the benefits of cold water swimming are well known to winter swimmers – it is exciting that the report by a team from Portsmouth University and Dr Mark Harper suggests that there could be a scientific basis to what we have long believed.
