PERSONAL CHALLENGE AND A LOVE OF ADVENTURE DRIVES MANY OF US TO SIGN UP TO EVENTS
“Did you win?” It is the jokey text message I receive after every swimming event. Of course the answer is always ‘no’ (apart from one glorious ‘yes’ (Breca Buttermere sprint swimrun 2018, if anyone is interested)). But for the majority of us, the prospect of winning is not a reason for entering a race.
Over-enthusiasm and an overinflated sense of your training abilities are more likely reasons. It is January, you are online, your finger hovering over an ‘enter’ button for a race that is farther than you have ever swum before. We have all been there – that adrenaline rush of a swim that is just beyond your current ability. From the letters I receive from readers, it is this personal challenge and a love of adventure that drives many of us to sign up to events.
