WHAT IS DIABETES?
Diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s ability to control blood sugar. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas can no longer produce enough insulin to maintain normal sugar levels in the blood, and in type 2, the insulin available is not working properly and the end result is the same. Elevated sugar levels lead to serious consequences, such as kidney, eye and nerve damage in the long term, and in the short term, people have to medicate and/ or change their diet and lifestyle to improve their ability to utilize the insulin they have available.
